We need you to wear a retainer to maintain the position of your teeth in the correct alignment that we all have worked so hard to achieve. The most common upper retainer we use is a clear plastic overlay called a ‘Trutain’ that covers all of the teeth. Initially, this retainer must be worn consistently throughout the day until your orthodontist advises you that it is only needed during the evening. The only time the retainer can be removed from the mouth is during the consumption of food, brushing your teeth or when simply cleaning the retainer.
To clean your retainer, use COLD water and liquid soap on a toothbrush, twice daily. Toothpaste should NOT be used to clean retainers as it will make your clear retainer opaque. Once a week, soak in Polident for a specified period of time. The most common retainer for bottom teeth is a thin wire which is cemented behind the lower front teeth on the day of your de-banding.
You have been given your upper and lower retainers plus an upper and/or lower model of your teeth which are a record of your beautiful smile. These models are very important, so please keep them in a safe place. If you lose or break your retainer or the lingual wire becomes loose, please telephone our rooms immediately to arrange the appropriate appointment. This is when your original model is very important. It is an accurate record of your teeth the day you had your braces off. We can use this model to make a new retainer. A fee will apply to broken or lost retainers.
