Underbite CI III

With a crossbite, the top and bottom jaws are misaligned.

There are two kinds of crossbite: a posterior crossbite is where the top back teeth bite down inside the bottom back teeth; and an anterior crossbite is when the upper front teeth sit behind the lower front teeth.

Either way, a crossbite can cause tooth decay, gum disease and stress on the jaw which causes chronic jaw pain, shoulder pain, neck and back pain as well as headaches and teeth grinding. Patients with a crossbite will look for a position of comfort and move their jaw to the side. Once the teenage growth period is complete, the jaw will settle into this asymmetrical position, causing significant jaw joint issues and asymmetry in the face.
